Frequently asked questions

Where can I find information about degree programs and graduation requirements for my major, minor, college, and NMSU?
All academic policies and procedures, including requirements for majors, degrees, and graduation, are in the undergraduate and graduate catalogs. The policies that apply generally correspond to the catalog published the year a student started coursework at NMSU.

Catalogs are online. For more information, contact the Registrar’s Office.

How can I track my progress toward a degree?
Students can generate and print a degree audit using the Student Academic Requirements (STAR) system. STAR is also available from the student tab on myNMSU. Help is available through the link at the bottom of the STAR login page.

Degree audits compare all NMSU coursework and transfer courses accepted by NMSU to degree requirements and reports progress toward degree completion. Advisors can help interpret the report.

I am a transfer student. Is there special information I should know?
Transfer students need to have their official transcripts evaluated at the Registrar’s Office. NMSU’s Transfer Guides contain information about transcript evaluation and course equivalency.

Does NMSU have an Honors Program?
The Honors College provides undergraduate students with opportunities to enrich their academic programs. In small classes taught by master teachers, honors students engage in lively discussion and collaborative investigation of interdisciplinary topics. Honors courses fulfill general education requirements and may fulfill some disciplinary requirements in your major.

Can I pursue a degree program that is not offered at NMSU?
The Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS) is designed for students with educational goals that are not met by traditional programs. The BIS bridges academic disciplines and colleges and allows a student to develop a course of study appropriate to his or her unique goals.

Where do I go for information on study skills and test-taking strategies?
NMSU's Student Success Centers provides academic support for students from all disciplines and at all levels. SSC programs can help students develop the effective learning and study strategies that are necessary for success in the university environment. Such strategies will also help students achieve their full potential as empowered, life-long learners.

Where can I get information on career opportunities for my major?
The Career Exploration Center helps students evaluate interests and suggests careers choices.
